About:
a) Me:
My name is Osvaldo La Rosa, born in 1964, visually impaired, Debian GNU/Linux user since Mar 3, 2000. I currently moderate a French and a Dutch-speaking BLinux discussion list, I'm the webmaster of the DOS2Shell2Linux.BLinuxman.net/ initiative, and I'm of course a great, great Open Source and GNU/Linux fan!
b) Accessibility:
Too many blind computer users believe that only M$ OSes are accessible for them with braille or speech: this is not the case! There are alternatives, and one of them is GNU/Linux. If you are looking for a free, powerful, blindfriendly, stable, open source, network-enabled, multi tasking, multi user and commandline-minded OS, then you must absolutely learn more about the GNU/Linux system and for example read:

Objective:
BrlSpeak is here to make life easier for blind people who wish to install a GNU/Linux distribution on their computer WITHOUT ANY assistance from a sighted person.
The objective is to create and develop a blindfriendly GNU/Linux distribution enabling a blind user:
a) To preconfigure the braille driver config file before running GNU/Linux
b) To compile the braille driver without having to see (or to hear)
c) To have the braille display immediately operational when booting GNU/Linux for the first time

Technical option:
To be able to realize this performance, the "0"-distribution has been based on a UMSDOS GNU/Linux version.
Why? Simply because each braille display runs under MS-DOS/FreeDOS, and this property can be used to insert a preconfig facility before starting GNU/Linux.

History:
The experiment was started on Jun 1, 2001. All primary objectives have been reached on Nov 1, 2001.
You can now download the BrlSpeak package (posted 17-11-2001) to give it a try!

Installation:
Installing the BrlSpeak Mini-Distribution is quite easy: you just need to unpack the ZIP file in the root directory on a FAT partition, then enter the ?:\LINUX directory and type: CFG <ENTER>. Follow all instructions carefully; you are ready in a few minutes.
Please read the BrlSpeak.TXT documentation provided with the ZIP (or ISO) package for details (currently available in: ENG, FRA, NED and ITA).

First, you need the InfoZip utility for DOS, since it isn't possible to unpack brlspeak.zip with PKunzip (unpacking with Winzip is OK).

A propos de:
a) Moi-même:
Mon nom est Osvaldo La Rosa, né en 1964. Déficient visuel, je suis utilisateur de Debian GNU/Linux depuis le 3 mars 2000. Je modère actuellement une liste de diffusion BLinux francophone et une liste néerlandophone. Je suis aussi le webmaster du site DOS2Shell2Linux.BLinuxman.net/, et je suis naturellement un grand grand adepte du logiciel libre et en particulier de GNU/Linux!
b) L'accessibilité:
Trop d'utilisateurs non-voyants croient que seuls les systèmes de M$ sont accessibles pour eux, en braille ou à l'aide d'une synthèse vocale. Ce n'est pas le cas! Il existe des alternatives, et l'une d'elle s'appelle GNU/Linux. Si vous recherchez un système puissant, basé sur le logiciel libre, accessible aux non-voyants, stable, ouvert, orienté réseau, multitâches, multiutilisateurs et permettant un accès en ligne de commande, alors vous devez absolument vous pencher sans tarder sur le système GNU/Linux et, par exemple, lire le document:

Objectif:
L'objectif de la distribution BrlSpeak est de faciliter la vie des personnes non-voyantes qui souhaiteraient installer une distribution de GNU/Linux sur leur ordinateur, de manière totalement autonome et SANS L'ASSISTANCE d'une personne voyante.
Concrètement, l'objectif est de créer et de développer une distribution de GNU/Linux accessible aux non-voyants, de sorte qu'il leur soit possible:
a) De préconfigurer le fichier de configuration du pilote braille avant de lancer GNU/Linux
b) De compiler le pilote braille sans devoir voir (ou entendre)
c) D'activer l'affichage braille dès le premier démarrage de GNU/Linux

Option technique:
Afin de pouvoir réaliser ce projet, l'option retenue a été de baser la distribution "0" sur une version UMSDOS de GNU/Linux.
Pourquoi? Parce que chaque afficheur braille fonctionne sous MS-DOS/FreeDOS et que cette aptitude peut être utilisée pour insérer un fichier de préconfiguration avant le lancement de GNU/Linux.

Historique:
L'expérience a débuté le 1er juin 2001. Tous les premiers objectifs ont été atteints le 1er novembre 2001.
Vous pouvez désormais télécharger le paquet BrlSpeak (mis en ligne le 17-11-2001), afin de l'essayer!

Installation:
L'installation de la Mini-Distribution BrlSpeak est très simple: il suffit de dépaqueter le fichier ZIP dans la racine d'une partition FAT, puis d'entrer dans le répertoire ?:\LINUX et de taper: CFG <ENTRER>. Suivez scrupuleusement toutes les instructions et vous serez prêts en quelques minutes.
Veuillez également consulter le document BrlSpeak.TXT qui accompagne le fichier ZIP (ou ISO) pour obtenir tous les details (actuellement disponible en: ENG, FRA, NED et ITA).

Téléchargement:
Pour commencer, vous avez besoin de l'utilitaire InfoZip pour DOS, puisqu'il n'est pas possible de dépaqueter brlspeak.zip avec PKunzip (dépaqueter avec Winzip c'est OK).

Jetez un coup d'oeil dans le changelog pour avoir la liste des mises à jour. Assurez-vous également que vous utilisez bien le patch le plus récent, avant de lancer CFG.BAT:

a) L'autore:
Mi chiamo Osvaldo La Rosa e sono nato nel 1964. Ipovedente, utilizzo Debian GNU/Linux dal 3 Marzo 2000. Al momento modero una lista di discussione su BLinux in lingua francese e una in lingua olandese. Sono inoltre il webmaster del sito DOS2Shell2Linux.BLinuxman.net/ e, ovviamente, un accanito sostenitore del software libero e di GNU/Linux!
b) Accessibilità:
Troppe persone cieche che utilizzano il PC credono che solo i sistemi operativi di M$ siano accessibili per loro tramite il braille o un'interfaccia vocale: questo non è vero! Ci sono delle alternative e una di queste si chiama GNU/Linux. Se state cercando un sistema operativo libero, versatile, blind-friendly, stabile, open source, utilizzabile in rete, multi tasking, multi utente e pensato per essere utilizzato tramite linea di comando, allora dovete assolutamente saperne di più su GNU/Linux e leggere, per esempio, questo documento:

Obiettivo:
BrlSpeak è qui per rendere la vita più semplice alle persone cieche che desiderano installare una distribuzione di GNU/Linux sul proprio computer SENZA essere aiutati in alcun modo da una persona vedente.
Lo scopo è quello di riuscire a creare e sviluppare una distribuzione pensata appositamente per le persone cieche o con problemi di vista e far sì che questi utenti possano:
a) Preconfigurare il file di configurazione del driver per il dispositivo braille prima di avviare GNU/Linux
b) Compilare il suddetto driver senza dover vedere (/sentire)
c) Avere il display braille immediatamente operativo già al primo avvio di GNU/Linux

Scelta tecnica:
Per poter raggiungere tutti gli obiettivi prefissati, la distribuzione "0" è stata basata su una versione di GNU/Linux UMSDOS.
Perchè questo? Semplicemente poichè ogni display braille funziona sotto MS-DOS; e questo permette di utilizzare un file di pre-configurazione prima di avviare GNU/Linux.

Storia del progetto:
L'esperienza ha avuto inizio il 1 Giugno 2001. Tutti gli obiettivi primari sono stati raggiunti il 1 Novembre 2001.
Ora è possibile scaricare il pacchetto BrlSpeak (reso disponibile on-line il 17-11-2001) per poterlo provare!

Installazione:
Installare la mini-distribuzione BrlSpeak è abbastanza semplice: è necessario solamente scompattare il file ZIP nella directory principale di una partizione FAT, entrare successivamente nella directory ?:\LINUX e digitare: CFG <INVIO>. Seguendo poi tutte le istruzioni con attenzione, sarete pronti in pochi minuti.
Siete invitati a leggere il file di documentazione BrlSpeak.TXT (al momento disponibile in Inglese, Francese, Olandese e Italiano), fornito con il file ZIP (o ISO), per tutti i dettagli.

Prima di tutto avete bisogno dell'utility InfoZip per MS-DOS, dal momento che non è possibile scompattare brlspeak.zip con PKunzip.

Over:
a) Mezelf:
Mijn naam is Osvaldo La Rosa, geboren in 1964. Ik ben visueel gehandicapt, en Debian GNU/Linux gebruiker sinds 3 maart 2000. Ik modereer momenteel een franstalige en een nederlandstalige BLinux discussielijst, ik ben ook webmaster voor het DOS2Shell2Linux.BLinuxman.net/ initiatief, en ik ben uiteraard een grote grote Open Source en Linux voorstander!
b) Toegankelijkheid:
Te veel blinde computergebruikers gaan ervan uit dat enkel de M$ systemen toegankelijk zijn voor hen met braille of spraak. Dit is onjuist! Er bestaan alternatieven, en eentje daarvan heet GNU/Linux. Ben je op zoek naar een gratis, krachtig, blindvriendelijk, stabiel, open source, netwerkondersteunend, multi tasking, multi user en commandline-minded OS, dan moet je absoluut snel meer leren over het Linux systeem, en bijvoorbeeld het:

Doelstelling:
BrlSpeak is er om het leven eenvoudiger te maken voor blinden die graag een Linux distributie zouden willen installeren op hun computer ZONDER ASSISTENTIE van een ziende persoon.
Het is de bedoeling een blindvriendelijke GNU/Linux distributie te vervaardigen en verder te ontwikkelen, zodat het mogelijk zou zijn:
a) Het configuratiebestand voor braille op voorhand in te stellen
b) De braille-driver te compileren zonder dat je ervoor moet zien (of horen)
c) Een operationele leesregel te hebben bij de eerste opstart van GNU/Linux

Technische optie:
Teneinde het project te kunnen realiseren, is het noodzakelijk geweest de "0"-distributie te baseren op een UMSDOS GNU/Linux versie.
Waarom? Gewoon omdat iedere brailleleesregel onder MS-DOS draait, wat de kans geeft om een preconfiguratiefaciliteit tussen te lassen voor dat GNU/Linux wordt gestart.

Geschiedenis:
Het experiment werd gestart op 1 juni 2001. Alle primaire doelstellingen werden bereikt op 1 november 2001.
Je kan nu het BrlSpeak pakket (gepost op 17-11-2001) afhalen om het te proberen!

Installatie:
De BrlSpeak Mini-Distributie installeren is vrij eenvoudig: je hoeft maar de ZIP file in de root directory van een FAT-partitie uit te pakken, vervolgens ga je naar de ?:\LINUX directory en typ je: CFG <ENTER>. Volg alle instructies aandachtig en je bent klaar in enkele minuten.
